'plantation'
McClelland Sculpture & Survey Award 2003

'plantation' is comprised of twenty eight 2.3m pod like forms, hollow cast in a sand/cement composite. Each pod weighs approx 300kg. They are arranged in a triangular matrix.

"Plantation talks about the geometric rigidity of tree plantations, man imposing geometry on nature. From a distance it both conforms into the contours of the landscape, but also imposes its militaristic presence on it."

Robert Lindsay
Deputy Director, McClelland Gallery

Plantation 2003: This particular work is about the dichotomy of the natural and the ordered; the proximation of the viewer; the proximation of each component; and the overall relationship between the work itself and the site. Each individual component stands alone while being at the same time homogenous within the community. This questions the position of the viewer as part of the created order and the wider order (environment) in which both are placed.

Plantation was awarded first prize (and $100,000) at the inaugural McClelland Survey & Award 2003. It is now a permanent part of the McClelland Gallery & Sculpture Park and can be viewed throughout the year.
